Our Year 4 Class

Welcome to our Year 4 class page!

The children are settling into Year 4 brilliantly and are very keen to learn lots of new and exciting things!

During Year 4, children will experience a variety of engaging lessons and activities which aim to build on children’s knowledge and assist them in reaching their full potential. In our core subjects the children will continue to build on previously taught skills alongside learning new skills and how to apply them in order to become fantastic readers, writers and mathematicians! Through our subject-led approach, we will be starting the year off by learning about the Romans during our first 2 history units of Roman Invasion and Roman Britain. We will then move onto other exciting elements of history and geography such as: rainforests, Maya civilisations and the USA.

Until Christmas, Year 4 will have 1 PE session and 1 swimming session a week. The PE session will be on Tuesday afternoons and aim to be based outside, so please ensure that your children bring the correct kit into school (suitable for all weathers and temperatures) and are appropriately prepared – i.e. hair tied back and no earrings in unless they are able to remove them themselves. Children will be asked to take their PE kits home at the end of every half term so that they can be washed and returned to school the following half term. After Christmas, Year 4 will have 2 PE sessions a week – one led by Sam and the other led by me.

The children will be tested on their spellings each Thursday and given a new set of spellings to practise at home ready for the following week. On Wednesdays, the children will take part in the 5-minute ‘99 Club’ test and do a mock ‘Multiplication Tables Check’ (MTC) using TTRS ‘Soundcheck’ mode. Therefore, all children need to be working on their times tables regularly at home throughout the year. Times Tables Rock Stars (https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student/26252) and Hit the Button (https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button) are excellent websites to support your children in doing this! I sent letters out at the start of the year with your child’s login details for TTRS, but if you require another copy then please let me know!

In Year 4, the children can expect to receive weekly homework on a Friday. This will consist of 2 things: maths homework focussing on the skills covered in the week to help consolidate learning, and history/geography homework wherein the children can pick a task from the bingo grid to complete each week. The weekly maths homework will be sent out via Microsoft Teams and the history/geography bingo sheet will be handed out at the beginning of each half term with a spare copy uploaded to Microsoft Teams too. If you need a reminder of your child’s Teams password or need their password resetting, please contact Miss Willetts as she can sort that out for you.

Lastly, it is important that children are regularly reading either independently or with an adult at home, covering a wide variety of books to help build their fluency and give them a wider vocabulary to help their writing styles. We will provide the children with opportunities to read their reading books in school – both independently for pleasure and to an adult to enhance fluency and comprehension. Because of this, I politely ask that you ensure your child brings their book bag containing their reading books into school every day so that they are always ready to read.

I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year filled with learning and laughter and I hope the children are too! If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Miss Harris
