Our Year 1 Class

Welcome to Year 1!

Our Year 1 journey is an exciting one, where we aim for the transition from Reception to Key Stage 1 to be as smooth as possible! In Year One we have many exciting adventures together and learn lots of amazing things along the way.

We aim to provide a creative curriculum which provides children with a range of activities to enrich, enhance and encourage their learning.

Reading book days and expectations:

Children should bring their book bag into school every day, with their reading books and reading diary inside.

Each child will be given a phonics book and a reading for pleasure book weekly. The phonics book will be linked to their current phonetical understanding (they should be able to read their phonics book with a 90/95% fluency). We don’t expect the children to be able to read their chosen reading for pleasure book – this is a book for you to enjoy at home as a family.

We endeavour to read with every child on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week as part of our Little Wandle group reading sessions, swapping the phonics books on the Friday session. We may read with your child outside of these times and therefore ask their book bag is brought in daily.

P.E Days:

Please ensure your child is appropriately prepared (i.e., no earrings and hair tied back in a hair bobble). PE kits will be sent home at the end of each half term to be washed and returned. Where children have had their ears freshly pierced, they will be unable to participate in PE.

PE days are on a Thursday and Friday.

Homework dates:

A small piece of phonics homework is given on a Friday. Children should bring completed homework into school once they have finished it to be marked.

If you wish to learn more about what we get up to in Year 1 or have any other queries, please contact either myself or Mrs Morris.
