Year 1

Welcome to our Year 1 page!

The children are settling in to Year 1 and are very keen to learn lots of new and exciting things! They are adapting to their new environment, routines and new teacher which is lovely to see.

The class are working hard to reach the expectations in Year 1 and have already been showing positive behaviour and learning skills.

In Year 1, there is an emphasis on hands-on learning and applying this to our everyday lives. We will also look to instil values into the children to stand them in good stead for the future; including being independent, respectful, ready to learn and responsible.

We will be developing the children’s reading and writing skills using a variety of activities and topics. This includes reading and discussing a wide range of books, including Peace at Last and Funnybones. In addition to the books read in school, children will be taking home with them a variety of books for them to read with you and record their progress in their reading diaries – so please make sure to check their book bags regularly!  In our writing lessons, we will be looking at creating our own stories based on what we have read as a class as well as working on our handwriting, phonics, spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout the year. It is so important now that we are in Year One to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces correctly.

The children’s numeracy will be developed using objects, pictures, shapes, resources and games. The children will be encouraged to be more independent with their learning to develop their perseverance when things get tricky. We will also be working really hard on our number formation, recognition and understanding; using this to begin to work on the four operations of: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Outdoor learning is always encouraged in Year 1 to enable the children to learn about the outside world. This includes our topic of ‘Who am I?’, learning about the changing seasons and our senses. Therefore, there will be numerous opportunities throughout the year for the children to be learning outside!

In Reception, Year 1 and 2 we follow the Letters and Sounds scheme for teaching phonics as well as practising our Rocket Words daily. We strongly encourage you to support your child in practicing to both read and spell these words at home regularly – as the children are tested on these weekly.

Please look at the resources provided on our website for more information on how to support your child at home and to find copies of Rocket Words and Reading Challenges if you have misplaced your copy.

Thank you for visiting the Year 1 page and I look forward to having an exciting and successful year with our Year 1 children!
